In
the Duarte reading, there were several different ways to help create memorable
moments in presentations. Personally, I don’t feel that any technique is
necessarily more effective than any other. However, I do prefer some of the
techniques more than others, just because they speak louder to me. In my
presentation, I can see myself using evocative visuals, emotive storytelling,
and shocking statistics. The visuals I plan to use will add to my presentation
and will illustrate the differences between Barbie and the average woman in a
more effective way than my descriptions. I also intend to use storytelling to
further illustrate how Barbie can have a negative impact on body image
perceptions. In my presentation, I also intend to use statistics, which I believe
my audience will see as shocking. These statistics will be on Barbie’s
measurements, as well as the measurements of the average woman, and I also
intend to use statistics on eating disorders.
In
the Beebe & Beebe reading, it focused a lot on language choice in
presentations. I think that language choice is important, but only to a certain
extent. Because we aren’t writing out speeches beforehand, I don’t feel it is
nearly as relevant to our presentations. The examples used in the book were
from presidential addresses, which are written speeches and are edited over and
over and they’re examined until the perfect word is chosen. So while I think
that language choice is definitely key in certain situations, I’m not sure that
it’s as relevant to our situation, mostly because we are not writing out our
speeches beforehand. I’m afraid that by planning too many words for my
presentation that I’ll stumble and if I don’t phrase something exactly how I
had intended to, I’m afraid that it will mess up my presentation because I’ll
stumble.
For the Duarte reading, I feel the same way that you do, and I also picked the same three techniques in my blog. I think that those three are the most popular and effective. I think these will be very effective in you big idea as well.
ReplyDeleteI also think that language choice is very important in a presentation. After going in class, I found very effective ways to use the techniques in our big presentation! Did you find those helpful?
I'm somewhat confused by what your question is. Would you mind clarifying a little bit?
ReplyDeleteIn class when we went over the techniques to use a memorable moment I found it helpful, I was just wondering if you found those helpful as well!
DeleteI like that you have a clear idea in mind for how you want to incorporate visuals, storytelling, and statistics into your presentation already and I think that all of the ways in which you plan on using them sound like they're going to be incredibly effective and memorable!
ReplyDeleteCarrie,
ReplyDeleteI said the exact same thing about language choice. I do think it's important, but I think how you actually present your speech is what really matters. Whenever I fully write out my speeches I get frustrated trying to put it on notecards because I want to say exactly what I wrote on my outline, not just bullet points.
